This blog is dedicated to all the military men and women who have served our country to protect our freedom, and to all the members of their families who support them here at home, miss them, cry for them and honor their actions. And to those who made the ultimate sacrifice … we honor you.
I grew up in Jacksonville NC. It’s the home, as I have often proudly said, to Camp Lejeune, the “largest Marine amphibious base in the world.” I don’t even know if that is accurate – but I grew up saying it, so it is to me. Military families were all around me – and I think are a core part of the fabric of our country. I am emotional every time I hear a story about a mom or dad who is overseas at Christmas.
In Junior High, I remember our school raising money to plant trees for the soldiers who died in Beirut. I still remember why there are so many trees in the middle of Lejeune Blvd. If you want to see information, check out this website for the Museum of the Marine.
As a result, I had an idea to make a military flag. We hired a few artists and I asked if anyone in the office had a connection to a soldier. Amber had a cousin and she sent in a picture. It made an unbelievably beautiful flag – our first military flag. She sent it to her cousin’s Grandpa – and we got the coolest letter back thanking us. He said it was too pretty to fly outside, he would be hanging it on his wall. It was so emotional – and we are so grateful to have made him happy.
I learned a little more about Amber that week – and I have to tell you that I love her a little bit more because she gets tears in her eyes when she talks about her cousin. He’s back home now and we are all glad that Amber’s heart is a little more peaceful to have him here on American soil. And we’re very appreciative of his service.
Do you have someone you love overseas? We’d love to hear about it.
If you want a flag like Amber’s, go ahead and submit your photo here (use promo code Military Hero) and then add your text and we will use the same border for your flag.
