February Is All About Friendship

Time to begin February’s search for the next Flagology Hero!  This month is all about friendship.  This is a tough one to define.

What makes a friend a hero?

Is it something huge – saving you from a burning building?  Or is it someone who holds your hand across a table when you share something that is very difficult?  Is it the friend who laughs with you over the antics of three-year olds who somehow turn into teenagers?  Or the friend who cries with you over the loss of a loved one?

Friends – I believe they are as important as family – that they are family.  You don’t need many – but life is enriched by connection.   To truly enjoy life, we need to share it with others.

So I have the honor of kicking off the nominations for February’s Flagology Hero Award – the winner will receive a year’s worth of free flags.

Laura – she is 5 foot nothing and I am 6 foot in heels.  But to me, she is larger than life.  I met her on the internet, in a support room for parents – not exactly the place I thought I would meet a best friend.  She is my hero in a big way – her courage and faith in her son Dylan over many years resulted in his healing from an undiagnosed neurological disorder.  She never believed that his behavior was “just difficult.”  She knew something was wrong – she loved him every day, no matter what was happening at school or at home – but she never gave up searching for answers.  Today, Dylan is a bright happy 11-year old with an unlimited future.  She has taught me about courage, individualism, speaking your mind, and about the magic of doves and foxes.  Laura has listened to my ideas more than anyone else in my life – no matter how long the email, she always responds.
And then there is my friend, Vicki.  I’m very proud to know her.  She is not only a lovely person, but she has more conviction than anyone else I know.  When she sees something wrong, she takes action to right it.  When she believes in something – an idea or a person, she is all in.  At age 50, she decided to put her skills to amazing use, and went back to nursing school.  She inspires me – she is working and raising two beautiful girls, and is in school full time.  She barely has time to eat – but she checks in with me every day to see how I am doing – and she makes me laugh.

I am blessed with so many amazing friends – new and old.  I hope to have the honor of writing about a few more as the month goes on.  Now it’s your turn – tell us about your friend – nominate them here, or post on Facebook.  The winner will be announced on Feb 25th.  Can’t wait to read about who is important in your life.

Love,

Susan
