Another Monday

On Monday mornings, the last thing that you probably want to think about is light, because daylight means that the weekend is officially over. This Monday morning, however, at least try to reconsider your feelings about light. Don’t worry, if you are reading this in bed with the blinds closed, there is still no judgement here.
Edith Wharton, the author of Ethan Frome, a high school reading list staple, was a woman of many talents. One of the most notable facets of her character was her perseverance. Although it was socially unacceptable for her to pursue writing or even a career as a woman of her social status, she proceeded to write novels and poems that are still in circulation today (Read more about her life here). A beautiful quote from one of Wharton’s poems reads, “There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.” While this quote can be taken to mean several different things, we look at it as a lesson of sorts. Each and every one of us has a light, a determinedly positive force that we can choose to spread to others. While there are times in life that we might be giving off light or times were we might just be reflecting it, spreading positive energy is a beautiful thing, because it really can be as contagious as flame. No matter how you choose to look at the quote, it shows just how impressionable those around you can be, so get out and spread a little good will today.
